The WNMU Mustangs hung with the Mesa State College Mavericks through three quarters, but with Mesa States' explosive rushing, the Mavs put up 24 points in the fourth quarter and drove the nail into the coffin, 31-7. The Mavs remain undefeated in conference play (2-0); whereas the Mustangs are still looking for their first win of the 2008 season.

Mesa State was the first to get on the board at 2:32 after Phil Vigil completed a 47-yard pass to Justin Murray for a touchdown.  The Mavs was able to march from their own 36-yard line to the end zone in just five quick plays.

WNMU had their own opportunity to score on the next drive after Chris Voller (Albuquerque, NM/Valley High School) (Albuquerque, NM) and Cody House (Tucson, AZ/Cholla HS) (Tucson, AZ) played tag-team in the quarterback position, but a missed field goal left the score at 7-0.

With things quiet in the second quarter, the Mustangs came out of halftime on fire.  Voller completed six passes for 68 yards to put the Mustangs in scoring position, but with a fourth-and-one at the four-yard line, WNMU was unable to put up seven points.

The Mavericks scored quickly in the fourth quarter thanks to another great 53-yard pass.  Bobby Coy finished the drive off with an eight-yard rush for another touchdown.

Mesa State continued on their scoring rampage on their next two drives.  The Mustangs quickly saw themselves down 28-0.  The Mustangs weren't out yet though.  House connected with John Means (Glendale, AZ/St. Mary's High School) (Glendale, AZ) for 32 yards with two minutes remaining to get good field position.  Four plays later Tramell McGill (Phoenix, AZ/Hamilton High School) (Phoenix, AZ) was on the receiving end of a 12-yard House pass to score the Mustangs' only points of the game.

Mesa State topped off the score with a 41-yard field goal with 1:32 remaining to finish the game.

For the Mustangs, Means posted 111 receiving yards.  Senior Carlos Miranda (Peoria, AZ/Peoria High School) (Peoria, AZ) chipped in with 68 yards.  House and Voller combined for 29-58 throws, good for 248 yards.  Overall, the Mustangs had a total of 285 yards.  The Mavericks finished with 478 yards.

On defense, Anthony Kahill (Cincinnati, OH/Jacobs High School) (Cincinnati, OH) had six solo tackles and two assist tackles. Maurice Wells (Tucson, AZ/Cienega High school) (Tucson, AZ) finished with five and two respectively. Wells also forced one Maverick sack for a loss of 13 yards.
